Pete Rose is one of the most controversial and well-known figures in sports history. MLB's all-time Hit King bet on baseball, including betting on his own Cincinnati Reds while he was player-manager and manager of the club. Beyond that, he's lied about...

Like many people who watched Pete play when they were growing up, I looked up to and respected him. On one hand, I still think that he should be honored at Cooperstown because of his accomplishments. On the other hand, I think that Major League Baseball made the right decision of banning him because he knew the rules and the price that he'd have to pay if he dared and he did it, got busted, and had to find out the hard way that the rules apply to him too. Given the professional sports leagues are advertising and endorsing sports betting nowadays, it's very hypocritical to keep him banned from Baseball and another thing that's very jarring is that a vast majority of the players that have been enshrined at the Hall are notorious drunks, womanizers, drug addicts, wife-beaters, murderers, and other incorrigible and bottom-feeding scum of the earth but they get a pass and Pete doesn't and most likely never will (while he's still alive, anyway). Either way, Pete screwed up big time and may be an unrepentant scumbag as a person but he should be honored for his accomplishments and it's very sad that he's not there even though he has no one to blame but himself for it.

Ichiro' case is coming up, and my guess is he will be a first ballot election. But he is one of the most overrated players in MLB history, IMHO. He had some great years, was an all time great base runner and fielder, and retired with 3000 hits, despite already getting over 1000 in Japan. But his career OPS plus was only 107, which is about average, if that for a right fielder, the position he played most of his career. Lance Berkman's OPS plus was 146....46 percent better than the league offense. Ichiro was only 7 percent better.....Ichiro' career OBP was only .353 , and he had the lowest power numbers of any full time outfielder of his time. He never drew walks!

I actually feel the HOF voters have generally gotten it right historically. The Vet's Committee is there for the guys that fail to make the ballot cut and deserve another look (and they are notorious for letting in good but not great players). And to be honest, most of the guys that fall off do so because they aren't HOFers. And they have a system that works; they tend to look at black ink, hardware, and the milestone numbers; 300 wins, 3,000 K's, 300 saves, 3,000 hits, 500 HR's and 70 WAR. A few guys got in that shouldn't be there like Dawson, Rice, and Eckersley, and compilers like Murray, Sutton, and Ryan, but overall, the eyeball test matches the advanced stats when it comes to the truly great players. Yes, they play favorites and keep guys on the ballot longer than they should, but these guys generally don't get in in the end. My gripe is keeping guys like Rose and the Steroid Era guys out. But keeping the latter out has forced voters, and myself as a fan, to take a closer look at guys that likely would not have gotten in and let them in like Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina, Jim Thome, Larry Walker, Scott Rolen, and Adrian Beltre. I feel that the Vet's Committee would have eventually elected Martinez, Mussina, and Thome had the 'roiders not been blacklisted. As a "small hall guy" I did come around on Martinez and Beltre. Beltre might have been one of the most underrated players ever. Moreover, many of the 'roiders, Sosa, Palmeiro, Ramirez, were compilers, one of the bane's of a small haller. I agree that voters should take a closer look at borderline guys and Lofton, Whitaker, and Nathan are interesting candidates. The issue I have with Whitaker is no black ink, hardware, and only four HOF years; Lofton lacks hardware and milestone numbers, and Nathan has 300 saves, but there isn't a great criterion for judging relief pitchers in general. The others mentioned simply aren't HOFers. Ortiz was a compiler, 4 great years and 16 average to mediocre years in which he compiled 500 HRs with no hardware. Again, I feel had the voters kept him out, the Vet's Committee would have eventually elected him.

No there's a huge problem. The BBWAA and the Hall of Fame committees are a joke. Have been for a while. They have no clue. Ritchie Ashburn in but Mattingly's overall numbers are higher. Scott Rolen? Really? I could write a thesis on players who have no business being elected and those who should
